NEC LaVie Light gets the hands-on treatment, looks better in person

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Filed under:

NEC’s new LaVie Light netbook didn’t exactly do much to make itself noticed when it was first announced, but our pals at Engadget Chinese say the pictures of the device are a tad deceiving, and that it’s actually a pretty solid little number in person. That’s apparently partly due to some solid fit and finish all around, and some fairly unique features like a screen that tilts back a full 180 degrees. They still aren’t sold on that over-sized bezel though, or the device’s thorougly ordinary spec list. Hit up the link below for a closer look.

Ao-LAB’s eSATA SSD flash drive conveniently includes USB port

Friday, October 10th, 2008

Filed under:

We’re still baffled that traditional eSATA flash drives require power from the USB port in order to operate (at least until that Power Over eSATA initiative starts bearing fruit), but it seems that Ao-LAB has found a nice, practical workaround for the time being. The outfit’s eSATA / USB Combo Drive arrives in 8GB, 16GB and 32GB flavors and provides dual interfaces along with a convenient way to power it if you’re dead-set on using eSATA for transfers. And given that speeds over eSATA absolutely obliterate those over USB 2.0, you’re going to want to. Shame there’s no pricing / availability information, but we suspect you can get a few hundred of ‘em sans issue should you contact the company seeking a bulk contract.

Incrudo 8GB flash drive reeks of expensive

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

Filed under:

Don’t spaz out or anything, but that thing you’re peering at above actually isn’t a small flask of cologne. No, no — it’s an 8GB USB drive, and it’s one of the most expensive you can buy. Reportedly built with titanium, the drive is water-resistant, crush-proof and fancied up further with a single red ruby. Sure, it’s 21,750 rubles ($837), but dollars to donuts they’d trade you one for a sure-to-be-authentic iPhone.

OpenPeak gets official with Atom-based OpenFrame IP “media phone”

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

Filed under:

OpenPeak was showing off an Atom-based version of its OpenFrame touchscreen / phone combo at IDF last month, but it’s only just now gotten fully official with it and, naturally, it’s taken the opportunity to dish out some new, prettied-up pictures. Not much looks to have changed with the device itself in the past month or so though, with it still promising to “simplify everyday family and media interactions” and, just as importantly for OpenFrame, “drive new revenues for service providers” — it′ll handle phone calls, too. Unfortunately, while OpenFrame is still saying we can expect to see the first devices based on the platform early next year, it’s apparently not yet ready (or able) to announce exactly who those OEM partners might be.

Asus Eee PC 901 Modded for Mobile Broadband

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

hsdpa-eee.jpg

That’s right folks! An enterprising member of the eeeuser forums has found a way to give the Asus Eee PC 901 HSDPA.

The instructions, stripped down for the layman, involve opening up the netbook, installing a HSPA or EVDO miniPCI-E card, and setting it up properly in the OS. Now that the cat’s out of the bag, can we expect an add-on kit from Asus? (And how does this mod affect the Eee’s battery life?) While you’re waiting though, feel free to check out the complete how-to here.

HTC’s Opal set to replace the aging Touch?

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

Filed under:

Is this supposed HTC Opal the followup to last year’s trailblazing HTC Touch? According to what looks like an internal HTC document gone viral, the Opal will run HTC’s newest TouchFLO 3D UI band-aid for WinMo 6.1 atop the same TI OMAP 850 proc already powering the Touch. Looking a bit deeper reveals quad-band GSM / EDGE with the same WiFi, MicroSD slot, Bluetooth 2.0, 2 megapixel camera, and 2.8-inch 240 x 320 pixel touchscreen found in the aged Touch handset. Only HTC, with its Touch Diamond, Touch Pro, Dream, and Xperia ͱ can force a flagship device down-market so quickly.

Audi pilot program tells drivers how to squeeze the lemon

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Filed under:

Though we’re hesitant to believe something this fantastic could actually be implemented in real life, word on the pavement has it that Audi is currently running a pilot program that informs motorists “how fast to drive to catch a green light.” Over in Ingolstadt, Germany, 50 traffic lights have been equipped with sensors that beam information to specially equipped whips; the network of “smart” signals not only “adapts to traffic patterns to deliver optimum light switching,” but gives drivers a heads-up in order to get ‘em through lights and cut down on idling / pollution / road rage. We can just hear those red light camera appeals now: “But judge, my car told me to do it!”

Audi unveils enviable MMI for upcoming A8 sedan

Monday, July 21st, 2008

For the acronym-challenged, Audi is getting serious about its Multi Media Interface. The automaker’s present system is widely regarded as the best of the best already, but it’s staying one step ahead of itself with the revamped version prepped for the A8 luxury sedan. Within the whip, you’ll find a 7-inch LCD with an 800 x 480 resolution alongside a DVD drive, 40GB internal hard drive, Dolby Digital 5.1 support, optional analog / digital TV tuner, Bluetooth, twin CPUs (800MHz and 500MHz), NVIDIA graphics for “genuine 3D maps” and an optional (but necessary, really) Audi Music Interface for connecting your favorite PMP. For those uninterested in the A8 (but suddenly obsessed with this new MMI), hang tight — it will be hitting other Audi vehicles here soon.

Is Flip the Future of Video?

Monday, May 5th, 2008

F260B_01.jpg

Just like Palm simplified the handheld organizer in what now seems eons ago, perhaps Flip Video is heading in the same direction with its low-cost, streamlined (I mean not a lot to learn) digital video camera at a price point that is half the cost of what we have come to accept as “typical” digital video camera capabilities.

I’ve just gotten my gadget-y hands on one of the groovy Ultra models and will report back soon from the field on what may be the future of DV

Windows 7 still slated for 2010 says Microsoft, Bill Gates just crazy-talking

Monday, April 7th, 2008

If your pants / panties were in a “bunch″ upon hearing news that Windows 7 would be headed into your ever-loving arms “next year,” you might just want to hold off on those party invites for a little bit. Sure, Bill Gates just happened to mention that we’d see a new version of the OS “Sometime in the next year or so,” but it’s looking like that “or so” makes a world of difference. Microsoft wants to chill everyone out with the somber news that its got no plans to introduce Windows 7 any earlier than January 2010 (three years from the launch of Vista), and reassure us that crazy old Gates may have just been talkin′ developer speak. “As is standard with the release of a new product, we will be releasing early builds of Windows 7 prior to its general availability as a means to gain tester feedback,” a spokesman for Microsoft said, downplaying Gates’ statement. Of course, this means that XP’s cutoff will suddenly move even further down the line, which makes us wonder what the point of setting that June 2010 date was in the first place. Why are you toying with us like this, Microsoft?

[Thanks, Tony]

Windows 7 to arrive next year, says Bill Gates

Friday, April 4th, 2008

You know, we should have paid a little closer attention to Microsoft’s decision yesterday to extend Windows XP sales to “June 2010 or one year after the general availability of Windows 7″ — if the company was really planning on shipping Windows 7 in 2010, that first date doesn’t make a lot of sense unless the plan is to ship Windows 7 much, much earlier. And hey — what’s Bill Gates doing telling investors this afternoon that Windows 7 will come “in the next year″ and that he’s “super-enthused” about it? As far as we know, the official Windows 7 timeline hasn’t changed, so Bill might just talking about beta versions, but something’s clearly up Windows-wise in Redmond — perhaps Vista’s wow is not long for this now.

[Thanks, Jon]

Inkel IDS-1500 WiFi phone dock keeps the iPod in awkward company

Monday, March 10th, 2008

You know how Apple products get when they’re around their “lesser” consumer electronics counterparts at parties. It starts with a lack of eye contact and some foot scuffing, and ends badly with a scene in close proximity to the punch bowl. That said, Inkel’s giving it a shot with this here IDS-1500 WiFi phone dock, which mixes an iPod dock with internet radio functionality and song playback through the phone. Not a bad combination in the least, so as long as the iPod steers clear of the alcohol. No word on price or availability.
