This is it, soldiers. The day you’ve been anticipating has finally arrived. Okay, so maybe that’s a build up not deserved by the lowly Metal Gear Solid 4 Bluetooth headset, but seriously, we’ve been waiting ages for this thing to ship. Like, so long that the whole MGS4 aura has already come and gone. Those still firmly planted in Snake’s posse can choose to prove their fanhood by snagging this thing now for $39.98; if all goes well, it should be headed your way in a matter of business days. Over and out.

Fusionman Yves Rossy, not to be confused with Buzz Lightyear, successfully crossed the English Channel today — the first to do so in a solo flight with jet-propelled wing. Rossy was dropped from a plane at 8,200 feet and flew 22-miles in under 10 minutes from Calais to Dover. When asked by National Geographic’s Kathryn Liptrott if he was worried about risk, Rossy replied, “I’m not worried about risk, I manage risk.” We’ve so gotta meet this guy. If you’re looking to pick up one of these jet powered carbon-fiber wings for your own unspeakable mischief, expect to pay around the $190,000 mark. Rossy is eager to see these aviation wonders catch on and has designs on forming a Red Arrows-style aerobatic team one day.

We’ve heard this about this dream so many times before, DRM that will make digital media as easy to use and as consumer friendly as a physcial medium like DVD. We’d normally be quick to disregard this as yet another DRM “ecosystem” for digital media, but the list of players backing the Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (or DECE) has us taking notice. As impossible as this seems, if anyone could make it happen, it’d be a group composed of: Best Buy, Cisco, Comcast, Fox, HP, Intel, Lions Gate, Microsoft, NBC Universal, Paramount Pictures, Philips, Sony, Toshiba, VeriSign, and Warner Bros — yes, we also find it hard to believe that all these companies are working together. We’ll have to wait until January at CES for the ins and outs of how this would actually work, but we do know it’ll be based around a “rights locker” which will amount to a website where digital purchases will be stored — we assume this is where VeriSign fits in. Oh, and Apple is noticeably absent from the list

Vonage today announced two new low cost call plans for their Vonage UK subsidiary. According to Vonage UK, “Following customer research and reacting directly to consumer concern about increasing household costs and spiraling business overheads, Vonage has created two new fixed rate call plans.”
They added, “Vonage subscribers report enormous savings on their monthly bills and comment on the speed and ease of swapping providers as well as installing Vonage. The new call plans fly in the face of increasing utility prices and the new £6.99 plan has been designed for the high percentage of Vonage consumers requesting more cost efficient plans for North America.”
Vonage’s £7.99, £14.99 and £18.99 plans incorporating up to 45 countries remain unchanged. The two new call plans offer Vonage’s lowest ever rates and are called V-Plan UK and V-Plan US.
• £5.99 per month - unlimited calls to the UK (V-Plan UK)
- Premium features such as call waiting, caller ID, call diversion, voicemail, three way calling (normally billed as extras with other providers), are included as standard.
• £6.99 per month - unlimited calls to the UK, United States and Canada (V-Plan US)
- As above plus, for only £1 extra per month, unlimited calls to the US and Canada to include calls to US and Canadian mobile phones.
Here’s a screenshot of the various V-Plan calling options. Click image to see the plans:

Vonage to Vonage calls are free. Also, there are no hidden costs with Vonage - prices are always quoted including VAT.
Vincent Potier, Managing Director of Vonage, said; “We recognise how important it is for customers to keep costs low and as predictable as possible - especially in light of the current economy. Our new plans enable customers to make worry free calls for as long as they want and show our long term commitment to listening and responding to our customers as well as offering the highest level of customer service and value for money”.

If you’ve tried every antenna and extender on the market today with subpar results, HD Communications is apt to become your new best friend. The outfit has just revealed its HD26200, a “complete outdoor wireless network bridge in the 802.11b/g unlicensed 2.4GHz band that sells for only $318.” Said device bridges wireless internet between two locales up to 5 miles apart without requiring a single RF cable, being that both Ubiquiti network radios are powered over Ethernet. If you’re looking for the catch, the bridge does require a direct line of sight between the two locations, but the firm is reportedly looking to expand its non-line of sight family by the summer’s end.

It’s far from the first to turn a standard issue Mac laptop into
entirely different, but Munk Bogballe has gone a bit further than most with its new Workstation laptop, which turns an otherwise modest MacBook into a full-fledged slab of excess. That includes an anodized aluminum surface, European aniline leather on the underside, and even a specially designed leather bag (which costs a hefty $640 on its own if you want a second one). As for the hardware itself, you get a standard 2.4GHz MacBook under that shiny exterior, right down to the MagSafe adapter, although it is at least topped off with 4GB of RAM and it apparently comes with Windows XP pre-installed for your convenience. If that sounds like the laptop you wish Apple had made, you can get your order in now for £3,500 (or just over $6,700), which also generously includes a donation of one
OLPC XO laptop to make you feel a bit better about your ridiculous purchase.

Not that we wouldn’t eventually expect a 2.6GHz MacBook, but Apple’s Hot News site is running this promo that references a new, upgraded model of the laptop (which right now only reaches 2.4GHz). Our take? We’re thinking typo, not premature announcement.

Ian Lamont writes “Terrence Russell has outlined an interesting theory about what industry Apple intends to break into next. He points to games. Forget Pippin II, or an iMac gaming rig — he thinks the mobile realm is where Apple will make a big product push. It’s not the first bit of speculation about Apple’s renewed interest in gaming, but Russell’s theory may have more legs, considering Apple’s invitation to develop games on the iPhone SDK, its strong mobile product line, and a Apple trademark extension filed three months ago.”

Automated paintball machines have been spotted holding down a-many of forts, but it’s still been relatively hard to find one pre-built and ready for purchase. Enter Evolution Model Technology, whose Paintball Sentry Turret is mighty enough to mow down even the deepest of crosstown rival cliques trying to get up in your area. Arriving in wired and wireless versions, the unit is available with water- or winter-proof armor, can be controlled remotely and features a head that rotates 350-degrees and tilts 90-degrees. Best of all, the cold blooded plastering machine can be customized to the hilt for those living in seriously dodgy locales, but considering the $1,399.50 (and way, way up) price tag, you better have one incredible stash of valuables to protect before pulling the proverbial trigger.

Shortly after Teraoka’s Deli Touch pen gave a reason to (almost) ignore the wait staff entirely, along comes the 3D Tobidasu table menu to make you order way more food than you likely would otherwise. Developed by TEC, the pop-up menu is designed to be integrated into restaurant tables, and reportedly, it enables patrons to browse the offerings and view individual items in “3D.” Granted, the photo above doesn’t really capture the effect, but if you look long enough, chances are you’ll be salivating in no time.

Bringing up the tail to Fujifilm’s pre-PMA announcements are four new compact cameras. The 12 megapixel F100fd ($380) features a 5x wide-angle optical zoom, mechanical and digital image stabilization, IrSimple, and a handy “dual shot mode” which takes a picture with and without a flash in rapid succession. It also brings a 2.7-inch LCD and likely useless (even for Fujifilm) ISO 12,800 setting. The “ultra-glam” 10 megapixel Z20fd ($200, pictured) targets the “movie-crazed Generation Z” with a “Dual Blog Mode” which automatically resizes stills or MPEG-4 movies for sharing. It also features the dual-shot mode found on the F100fd, intelligent flash, 16 pre-set scene modes, face detection, and a “stamp it” mode which replaces your friend’s faces with “fun designs.” Lastly we have the new J-series of 8.2 megapixel J10 ($150) and J50 ($150) compact shooters with 3x and 5x optical zooms, respectively. All available in March, all pictured in the gallery below.

Vuzix, once known as Icuiti, is back with a modified video eyewear design for gamers which they claim is a world’s first. The AV902-C starts with their AV902 headset’s twin 640 x 480 LCDs. They then add the ability to segment multi-player displays so that the person wearing the AV902-C only sees their half (2-player) or quadrant (in 4-player) of the screen presented as a 62-inch virtual display. Up to four of the AV902-C’s can be daisy chained together for distraction-free (and cheat-free) gaming. Available February for an undisclosed price.

Watch out Ben Heck, there’s a new console modder in town, and this here wooden portable SNES is making you look bad. There’s really not much else to say about this unit other than our standard dose of fanboyishness. The thing was built out of a standard Super Nintendo, and LED-backlit PSONe display and a whole bunch of love — that wooden case is all custom. Suffice it to say: we want. Video of it in action after the break.
