Full Facial Transplant Is One Step Closer

Hugh Pickens writes “A Chinese medical team led by Shuzhong Guo of the Fourth Military Medical University in Xi’an has successfully completed the first transplant to include facial bone in a transplant on a man whose face was slashed by a bear. The Chinese graft included muscles, nerves, blood vessels, cartilage and skin and included an intact salivary gland, another first. Two years after the procedure, the man can eat, drink and speak, thanks to the gradual fusing of transplanted nerves and muscles with what remained of the patient’s own. This transplant together with the another ground breaking transplant last year by French doctors that removed a huge tumor that had completely infiltrated and disfigured their patient’s face, now sets the stage for a full facial transplant.”

DNA Bar Coding Finds Mislabeled Sushi

Hugh Pickens writes “The NY Times reports that Kate Stoeckle and Louisa Strauss, who graduated this year from the Trinity School in Manhattan, took on a freelance science project to check 60 samples of seafood using a simplified genetic fingerprinting technique called DNA Bar Coding to see whether the fish New Yorkers buy is what they think they are getting, and found that one-fourth of the fish samples with identifiable DNA were mislabeled: A piece of sushi sold as the luxury treat white tuna turned out to be Mozambique tilapia, a much cheaper fish that is often raised by farming. Roe supposedly from flying fish was actually from smelt.” (More below.)

Bees Help Detectives Catch Serial Killers

Hugh Pickens writes “The way bumblebees search for food could help detectives hunt down serial killers — because just as bees forage some distance away from their hives, so murderers avoid killing near their homes, says a University of London research team. The researchers’ analysis describes how bees create a ‘buffer zone’ around their hive where they will not forage, to reduce the risk of predators and parasites locating the nest. This behavior pattern is similar to the geographic profile of criminals stalking their victims. ‘Most murders happen close to the killer’s home, but not in the area directly surrounding a criminal’s house, where crimes are less likely to be committed because of the fear of getting caught by someone they know,’ says Dr. Nigel Raine. Criminologists will fold this insight into their models using details about crime scenes, robbery locations, abandoned cars, even dead bodies, to hone the search for a suspect.”

Hugh Pickens writes “John Tierney poses the question in the New York Times ‘what if we let athletes do whatever they wanted to excel?’ Before you dismiss the notion, consider what we’re stuck with today — a system designed to create a level playing field, protect athletes’ health and set an example for children, that fails on all counts. The journal Nature, in an editorial in the current issue, complains that ‘antidoping authorities have fostered a sporting culture of suspicion, secrecy and fear’ by relying on unscientifically calibrated tests, like the unreliable test for synthetic testosterone that cost Floyd Landis his 2006 Tour de France victory and even if the authorities manage to correct their tests, they can’t possibly keep up with the accelerating advances in biology.” Read on for more.

New Scientific Evidence Emerges In Anthrax Case

Among the revelations: Anthrax fingerprinting was not critical to the investigation, as many reports have suggested. Rather, brute-force genetic sequencing, with the help of the J. Craig Venter Institute, helped crack the case. New potential motivations by Ivans are also revealed.”

Cooking Stimulated Big Leap In Human Cognition

Hugh Pickens writes “For a long time, humans were pretty dumb, doing little but make ‘the same very boring stone tools for almost 2 million years,’ says Philipp Khaitovich of the Partner Institute for Computational Biology in Shanghai. Then, 150,000 years ago, our big brains suddenly got smart. We started innovating. We tried different materials. We started creating art and maybe even religion. To understand what caused the cognitive spurt, researchers examined chemical brain processes known to have changed in the past 200,000 years. Comparing apes and humans, they found the most robust differences were for processes involved in energy metabolism. The finding suggests that increased access to calories spurred our cognitive advances, although definitive claims of causation are premature. In most animals, the gut needs a lot of energy to grind out nourishment from food sources. But cooking, by breaking down fibers and making nutrients more readily available, is a way of processing food outside the body. Eating (mostly) cooked meals would have lessened the energy needs of our digestion systems, thereby freeing up calories for our brains. Today, humans have relatively small digestive systems and allocate around 20% of their total energy to the brain, compared to approximately 13% for non-human primates and 2-8% for other vertebrates. While other theories for the brain’s cognitive spurt have not been ruled out, the finding sheds light on what made us, as Khaitovich put it, ’so strange compared to other animals.’”

The DIY Dialysis Machine

Millie Kelly was born with a condition that required an immediate operation. During this operation her kidneys started to fail and since she was too small for dialysis machines, doctors told her parents that she was unlikely to live. Luckily for Millie, Dr. Malcolm Coulthard and a colleague tried to build a much smaller kidney machine on their own and they were successful. Her mother said, “It was a green metal box with a few paint marks on it with quite a few wires coming out of it into my daughter - it didn’t look like a normal NHS one.” The girl was hooked up to the machine over a seven day period to allow her kidneys to recover. Two years later, her mother Rebecca says she is “fit as a fiddle.” You should see what Dr. Coulthard can build using a postage stamp, a tuning fork, a lawn chair and a jellyfish.

Drug Halts Decline In Alzheimer’s Patients

ljw1004 writes “Alzheimer’s researchers are divided on whether the disease is caused by ‘beta amyloid’ (a peptide found in Alzheimer brains) or by ‘tau protein’ (normally used for cellular scaffolding, but can aggregate out of control and destroy neurons). Today in Chicago a new drug has been announced that stops tau aggregation and appears to have halted Alzheimer’s-related decline in 300 clinical trial patients. The drug is known as ‘rember.’ Do you have friends or family who appear to be on the road to dementia? Here is an online questionnaire, part of one used in the clinical trial to diagnose dementia. (Disclosure: I made the online questionnaire, and my father is one of the scientists behind the drug.)”

Miniaturized DNA Sewing Machines

Roland Piquepaille writes “Japanese researchers have found a way to build long threads of DNA using miniaturized hooks and bobbins. In fact, they’ve demonstrated how to manipulate delicate DNA chains without breaking them. They’ve designed these laser-directed microdevices to pick up and manipulate individual molecules of DNA. The scientists have used optical tweezers to catch and move these microdevices, which could be used in the future to detect genetic disorders such as Down’s syndrome.” Here’s a link to the journal article.

Ask Aubrey de Grey About Longevity Research

There may be such a thing as a conventional scientist — but Aubrey de Grey is not one. Instead, biogerontologist de Grey has spent much of he last 20 years investigating the science of aging by considering the aging process as a multifaceted disease whose manifestations can be mitigated, rather than an inevitability to merely accept. That might not be unusual in itself, but de Grey believes that by addresing the causes and symptoms of aging, human life can be extended to at least 1000 years — a stance has earned him accolades and contempt in various degrees. (He might not especially mind being called names like “rogue” and “maverick,” though.) De Grey is also chairman and chief science officer of The Methuselah Foundation, whose M-Prize for extending the lifespan of mice has been mentioned on Slashdot before. First DNA Molecule Constructed from Mostly Synthetic Components

ScienceDaily is reporting that Japanese chemists have created the world’s first DNA molecule comprised of almost entirely artificial components. The breakthrough could lead to advances in both medicine and technology, possibly utilizing the massive storage capacity of DNA. “In the new study, Masahiko Inouye and colleagues point out that scientists have tried for years to develop artificial versions of DNA in order to extend its amazing information storage capabilities. As the genetic blueprint of all life forms, DNA uses the same set of four basic building blocks, known as bases, to code for a variety of proteins used in cell functioning and development. Until now, scientists have only been able to craft DNA molecules with one or a few artificial parts, including certain bases.”

Synthetic Molecules Emulate Enzyme Behavior

FiReaNGeL writes “Ohio State University chemists have created a synthetic catalyst that can fold its molecular structure into a specific shape for a specific job, similar to natural catalysts. In tests, the chemists caused the catalysts to twist one way or the other, either to form one chemical product or its mirror image. They confirmed the shape of the molecules at each step using techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Being able to quickly produce a catalyst of a particular shape would be a boon for the pharmaceutical and chemical industries.”

Researchers Modify T-Cells, Make Them HIV Resistant

DieNadel writes to share that naturally occurring proteins called “zinc fingers” are being used in a new approach to AIDS treatment. Using modified T-Cells with the zinc fingers, researchers at the Pennsylvania School of Medicine have shown a reduction in viral load in mice. “‘By inducing mutations in the CCR5 gene using zinc finger proteins, we’ve reduced the expression of CCR5 surface proteins on T cells, which is necessary for the AIDS virus to enter these immune system cells,’ explains first author Elena Perez, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Penn. ‘This approach stops the AIDS virus from entering the T cells because it now has an introduced error into the CCR5 gene.’”
