Charmed by Philips’ latest Active Crystals USB drives

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

Ok, you’ve really gone and put us in a twist this time Philips. The he-man editors of Engadget haven’t exactly been wooed by Philips’ lineup of Active Crystals USB drives slathered in Swarovski excess. Then again, we’re not their target audience. Somehow though, these new 2GB Happy Laura and Naughty Raymond USB drive robots make us want to titter coyly with demure fingertips pressed lightly to our pouty mouths. But for €150 (about $223), we won’t.

HP Intros Three New Photosmart Printers

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

HP today announced three new additions to its Photosmart printer line, including two portable printers and one stationary five-ink model.

The HP Photosmart A630 features a 4.8-inch touchscreen, which, according to HP, is the largest available on any portable printer. The A630 also offers built-in features some 300 built-in tools for editing, drawing, and touching up photos, without the aid of a PC.

The other portable printer, the Photosmart A530, meanwhile, is the only $99 printer that prints photos up to 5×7-inches, according to HP. The printer also offers clipart and borders for enhancing photos.

The HP Photosmart D5460 is a stationary printer with a five-ink printing system, which, according to HP, can produce quality formerly only available with six-ink systems. It also features a 1,5-inch color screen, memory card slots, CD and DVD printer, and Smart Web Printing, which offers easy printing directly from the Internet.

The A630 and A530 are both available in August for $149 and $99, respectively. The D5460 is available now for $99.

How Do I Set Up a New Network for the Printer?

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

This question from Marvin P. Stein came in for ExtremeTech editor Loyd Case:

I have five computers using my Linksys N wireless network, which also includes an HP Color Laserjet 3600dn printer that is connected via USB cable to one of the computers.

My question is: How do I set up a second, separate wireless network which will also be able to print to that printer? I have clients who frequently bring in their wireless-enabled notebook computers. I want them to be able to print their reports to that printer (and possibly get access to the Internet) without giving them access to my WEP-encrypted network.

Loyd’s reply after the jump
:

Loyd’s reply:

Good news: The Color Laserjet 3600dn actually has an Ethernet port. By enabling the port, you should be able to connect a second wireless router that’s configured differently from your existing one. I wouldn’t recommend leaving the new network unprotected, however. You should still enable WPA or, at a minimum, WEP security, so that your neighbors can’t suddenly start using your printer. You can always post the security key information for the customer Wi-Fi link for your clients.

Before diving into this, you should consult your printer’s documentation or contact HP to make sure the USB port and the Ethernet port can be used simultaneously.

Goldmund’s $300,000 Epilogue Speaker System joins Media Room

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Filed under:

Personally, we can only imagine what a $300,000 speaker setup sounds like. But you — we know you’re eager to pick up the Epilogue Speaker System (previous edition shown) and rub it in the faces of everyone else, right? Regardless of whether you answered that truthfully or not, Goldmund (those same cats who actually had the nerve to create a $17,000 Blu-ray player) has introduced the latest version of the aforesaid system, which will now be built specifically for integration into the Goldmund Media Room. Pretty though they may be, we have a sneaking suspicion you won’t be getting much bang for your buck with these — but then again, what do our virgin ears know, anyway?

As was hinted at some days ago, the Cupertino crew decided that the iPhone was finally ready for prime time in belt clips around the nation. Well, great news friends, Enterprise to Apple means Microsoft Exchange and ActiveSync support. We can expect features like Push mail and Contacts, Global Address List, Cisco IPsec VPN, Authentication via certificate, and even remote wipe. When can we get our greedy little hands on this you ask? As soon as the next iPhone firmware update rolls out, that’s when.

Carnegie Mellon’s “Crusher” military bot getting $14 million upgrade

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

Filed under:

Carnegie Mellon’s so-called “Crusher” unmanned military vehicle already had quite a bit going for it in its previous incarnation, but it now looks to set to expand its robotized arsenal even further, courtesy of a $14.4 million grant from the Army. According to the university’s National Robotics Engineering Center, the updated bot will make use of the “latest suspension, vehicle frame, and hybrid-electric drive technologies to improve upon its predecessor’s performance” while also promising to, somewhat ominously, “push the envelope for autonomous and semi-autonomous operation.” That the NREC says, should allow the bot to begin working alongside troops in five or ten years, with it initially confined to convoy roles before it puts its autonomous skills to use in “tactical” missions.
