Amazon Kindle Sold Out for Holidays

Monday, December 1st, 2008

Amazon may have missed the boat a bit by failing to introduce the Kindle’s second rev before the holiday season, but such a misstep seems to have had zero effect on the company’s popular, Oprah-endorsed ebook reader. Customers looking to pick up a new unit from the site in time for the holidays are out of luck.

Amazon now lists the Kindle’s shipping date as 11 to 13 weeks (though, gift-wrap, for the record, is still available). Amazon adds,

Due to heavy customer demand, Kindle is sold out. Please ORDER KINDLE NOW to reserve your place in line. We prioritize orders on a first come, first served basis. This item will arrive after December 24. Note that Kindles cannot currently be sold or shipped to customers living outside of the U.S.

Amazon still has listings for used units via third party sources. The used items, however, begin at $519.99–that’s up from a $359 new retail price.

Report: Amazon Kindle 2 Coming Soonish

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Amazon missed the boat a bit when it pushed back the second iteration of its popular e-book reader. The Kindle’s new model, coupled with a beaming endorsement from Oprah, could have made the device the big hit of the holiday season. The company, however, opted to push it back in order to issue “last minute changes” to the gadget’s software.

According to TechCrunch, the new device is set to hit shelves in early ̫. The device is set to be thinner and longer than the original, with fixes to a number of button issues that plagued its predecessor.

A student version with a bigger screen is also set to drop the first half of next year, according to the site.

starwars.jpg

Phew, you made it. Friday is finally here, and it’s time to kick off your weekend with some great bargains. Check out Gearlog’s finds for today.

1. OK, this is geeky: Dr. Pepper/Ssven-Up Inc. promised to give everyone in America a free Dr. Pepper if Guns N’ Roses released the album “Chinese Democracy” in 2008 (it had been in the works since 1994). Well, Axl proved the naysayers wrong, and the album officially will be on sale this Sunday. Go to Dr. Pepper’s Web site on Sunday, November 23, and get a coupon for a free Dr. Pepper. Remember, the offer only is valid on Sunday, so don’t miss it–and rock on.

2. Star Wars fans: Woot is offering the awesome “Star Wars Vault: 30 Years of Treasures From the Lucasfilm Archives″ (above) for only $29.99. It has a list price of $85, so this is a steal. The “Star Wars Vault” is the official illustrated book celebrating the 30th anniversary of the first “Star Wars” movie, which includes removable reproductions of memorabilia, along with two CDs of vintage radio ads, original cast interviews, George Lucas’ commentary, and even Carrie Fisher singing in the “Star Wars Holiday Special.” Whoa.

3. As part of Amazon’s Friday sale, the Web site offers five albums for $5 each.Today’s selection includes “the latest album of covers from James Taylor, the epic double-disc final statement from rap legend Notorious B.I.G., aggro rock from Theory of a Deadman, classic smoothness from the Carpenters, and an underground hip-hop masterpiece from Madvillain.” You really can′t beat buying an entire album online for $5.

OLPC’s Give One, Get One Program Debuts on Amazon

Monday, November 17th, 2008

olpc%20amazon.jpg

The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) Foundation on Monday revived its Give One, Get One (ˇˇ) program on Amazon.com.

Consumers in the U.S. can now buy one of the open-source, Linux-based XO laptops for themselves and donate another one to a needy child for $399. Don′t want a laptop but want to help? Donate one of the devices to OLPC for $199 per machine.

International shipping will be handled by Amazon′s UK Web site, and will not be available until December 16.

In an effort to drum up support for its laptops, OLPC started its G1G1 program in November 2007 with a short-term, two-week promotion. Prior to this program, supporters could not purchase the $200 computers for themselves.

OLPC announced plans to ship via Amazon in September. The organization was dealt a blow earlier this year when it lost its CTO as well as the support of Intel.

Michail Bletsas, OLPC′s chief connectivity officer, told Gearlog in January that Intel’s departure was “pretty disappointing, but at the end of the day, it seems that all Intel cared about was putting laptops in the hands of kids, as long as they were Intel Inside laptops.”

OLPC soon tapped another tech giant - Microsoft. OLPC announced in May that it would release laptops with support for Windows. “Free” and “open source” are not usually two of Microsoft’s favorite words, but Craig Mundie, chief research and strategy officer at Microsoft, said the company’s goal in joining OLPC was to “make technology more relevant, accessible and affordable for students.”

Mystery Science Theater Turns 20

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

RimmerExperience writes “Hard to believe that Mystery Science Theater 3000 is 20 years old. This NY Times article provides a brief synopsis from the humble but inspired beginnings in a Midwest TV studio, to the making of MST3K: The Movie, to what the creators are up to today. It’s interesting that the original creators are still involved in MST3K-style riffing in some way. So if you are looking for your traditional Turkey Day fix, plug in your old VHS, tune into BitTorrent or check out their current projects — Riff Trax (Mike Nelson) or Cinematic Titanic (Joel &amp Trace). Keep circulating the tapes, er, MPEGs.”

EA Recommends Hilarious Work-Around For RA3 CD-key

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

sunderbear noted that EAs Command & Conquer 3 shipped missing the last digit of the CD Key. He writes “EA’s brightest minds have put their synapses into overdrive in order to whip up a comical work-around. ‘There is currently a work-around that may allow you to bypass this issue. Since you have the first 19 characters of the code already, you can basically try guessing the last character,’ said a note on EA’s customer support site. Yes, they′re serious. ‘To do this, simply enter your existing code, and then for the last character, try the letters A-Z, and then the numbers 0-9. You should eventually get the right combination, and be able to play the game.’” It appears that the helpful hint has been purged.

The Greatest Scientific Hoaxes?

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Ponca City, We love you writes “The New Scientist has an amusing story about the seven greatest scientific hoaxes of all time. Of course, there have been serious cases of scientific fraud, such as the stem cell researchers recently found guilty of falsifying data, and the South Korean cloning fraud, but the hoaxes selected point more to human gullibility than malevolence and include the Piltdown Man (constructed from a medieval human cranium); a ten-foot “petrified man” dug up on a small farm in Cardiff; fossils ‘found′ in Wurzburg, Germany depicting comets, moons and suns, Alan Sokal′s paper loaded with nonsensical jargon that was accepted by the journal Social Text; the claim of the Upas tree on the island of Java so poisonous that it killed everything within a 15-mile radius and Johann Heinrich Cohausen’s claim of an elixir produced by collecting the breath of young women in bottles that produced immortality. Our favorite: BBC’s broadcast in 1957 about the spaghetti tree in Switzerland that showed a family harvesting pasta that hung from the branches of the tree. After watching the program, hundreds of people phoned in asking how they could grow their own tree but, alas, the program turned out to be an April Fools′ Day joke.” What massive scientific hoaxes/jokes have other people witnessed?

UK UFO Sightings Declassified, Still No Intergalactic Relations

Monday, October 20th, 2008

schwit1 is just one of the massive flood of readers (and publications) writing to tell us about the recently declassified UK Ministry of Defense account of a supposed UFO sighting. Included are nineteen sightings between 1986 and 1992, with the most notable being a sighting in 1991 with a US Air Force pilot’s first-hand account. Not that this lends an air of credibility to anything, just more papers with more words. “Almost 200 such files will be made available by the MoD over the next four years. […] UFO expert and journalism lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University, Dr David Clarke, said the documents would shed new light on relatively little-known sightings. He said some conspiracy theorists would already have decided that the release of the papers was a ‘whitewash.’ He added: ‘Because the subject is bedevilled by charlatans and lunatics, it is career suicide to have your name associated with UFOs, which is a real pity. The National Archives are doing a fantastic job here. Everyone brings their own interpretation. Now you can look at the actual primary material — the stuff coming into the MoD every day — and make your own mind up.’”

World’s largest LED screen coming to Dubai

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

By this point, you should fully understand that “Dubai” and “world’s largest” go hand-in-hand, so it’s quite fitting that said city is receiving the planet’s most humongous LED screen. Designed by UAE development company Tameer Holding, the 33-story high display will reportedly be “embedded on an intended commercial tower in the Majan district of Dubailand,” where it will stand tall and blast out advertisements to onlookers some 1.5-kilometers away. Dubbed Podium, the building will also house 33 levels of “premium commercial office space, two floors dedicated to retail and four floors for parking.” There’s no word on when the project will be completed, but we don’t suspect Tameer will be dragging its feet in getting this up.

The new Bluetooth MBW-200 range of Bluetooth watches is an expansion of the highly successful Bluetooth MBW-150 range, which enables you to control your phone with your watch.

CTIA 2008: Free Slacker for BlackBerry Users

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

slackerblackberry.jpg

BlackBerry users have a reputation for being hyper-productive business professionals that are almost pathologically tied to their smartphones. As of today, however, they can be Slackers, too. Research In Motion has announced a partnership with Slacker.com that will let BlackBerry users play Internet radio stations.

You can stream music, or even better, cache stations and individual songs on your BlackBerry’s memory card, so you can listen when you have zero bars of coverage. Just listening to stations is free, but you need to subscribe to Slacker’s premium service ($10 a month) to save individual songs.

As a doting owner of a Blackberry Curve 8330 and a daily listener to Slacker Radio, I am pretty psyched. This is the kind of app RIM needs, to win the hearts and thumbs of consumers and compete with the iPhone 3G. I’ve played with the service very briefly, and the interface looks pretty clean and easy to use. I can’t speak to the audio quality yet, but I guarantee it will sound better than the music most current BlackBerry owners listen to on their phones–which is to say, none.
