Today at Nokia World in Barcelona, the eponymous handset manufacture unveiled its latest smartphone, the N97. Referred to by the company as “the world’s most advanced mobile computer,” the phone features a 3.5-inch touch display and a slide out QWERTY keyboard.
The N97 also features a built-in A-GPS sensor and electronic compass, making it easier for the phone to sense its “social location,” in order to update social networks with real-time information. The Web 2.0-friendly handset also features information about friends, news, and social networks on its home screen–and, unlike certain Apple phones, the thing can play Flash videos.
The handset has 32GB of on-board storage (expandable to 48GB), a 5MP camera with a Carl Zeiss lens, and DVD quality video capture. The phone will begin shipping in Europe in the first half of next year for EUR 550 ($693.44).

When Apple’s Bill Evans was asked about upcoming holiday surprises, the spokesman from the infamously tight-lipped company had this to say: “Our holiday lineup is set.”
We’ve recently received new iPods, MacBooks, and Cinema Displays–and, oh yeah, no one seemed to notice, but the company also gave the iPhone a bit of a bump. Still, as ever, rumors abound about product updates, including but not limited to new iMacs, Mac Pros, and Mac Minis.
But pressed on the question by Macworld, Evans stayed firm. So, there you go. Save those blurry spy shots for January.

Apple today issued the financial results for the fiscal 2008 fourth quarter. The results where better than many expected, thanks in no small part to the continued success of the company’s iPhone, but Apple, joined on the call by Steve Jobs in the first time since 2000, warned that the company’s success was likely to slow down in the near future.
Apple posted a $7.9 billion revenue and net quarterly profit of $1.14–that’s up from $6.22 billion and $904 million, the year-ago quarter. The company shipped 2,611,000 Mac computers–a 21 percent growth and 11,052,000 iPod, an eight-percent growth over the year-ago quarter. iPhone sales were up in a big way as well–6,892,000 up from 1,119,000 in the year-ago-quarter.
“Apple just reported one of the best quarters in its history, with a spectacular performance by the iPhone–we sold more phones than RIM,” said Jobs. “We don’t yet know how this economic downturn will affect Apple. But we′re armed with the strongest product line in our history, the most talented employees and the best customers in our industry. And $25 billion of cash safely in the bank with zero debt.”

According to a couple of big retailers in Europe, Apple is cutting off the supply of the Mac Mini, the company’s tiny desktop PC. If true, it’s an interesting decision, since the Mini is the one of the cheapest Apple products–presumably that would be a plus, as the world economy continues to go down the toilet.
Of course Gizmodo points out that, despite its initial success after being released early in 2005, the Mini hasn’t exactly been a top seller for Apple.
It seems a bit early for a revamp of the line, especially in light of last week’s major notebook announcement. But you never know when Steve Jobs and company will give us “one more thing.”

Truphone today announced Geraldine Wilson as its new chief executive officer. Geraldine was the former Vice President and General Manager of Yahoo!’s European mobile division. Always nice to see a female CEO being appointed… to you know, “break the good ole boy network.”
Yeah, I know, that phrase has been done to death lately by Sarah Palin.
truphone is a very cool VoIP app that works on many mobile phones, including the iPhone. In fact, they were one of the first to offer a VoIP app for the iPhone. Geraldine Wilson said: “Truphone has clearly established itself as a pioneer of next generation mobile telephony with ground breaking applications such as Truphone for the iPhone. But every successful disruptive technology must eventually become the norm in order to truly succeed, so the mass market is where the future must lie for Truphone.”
Previous CEO James Tagg, who originally invented and developed the Truphone service with CTO and co-founder Alistair Campbell, moves to the role of Chief Architect.

If you’ve been following the new iRex reader, the 1000 series, you’ll be disappointed to know — as we were — that the high-end 1000SW will not come equipped with 3G connectivity as we previously reported. Apparently jkOnTheRun got in touch with iRex rep Loeki van der Lee after unsuccessfully searching for hard evidence on the feature, and he confirmed that the device will sport WiFi and Bluetooth, but nothing more. Honestly, based on his short responses and the information we snagged from Forbes the day before the announcement, it sounds as if plans might have changed at the last minute. Still, it won′t alter the fact that the $849 device won′t provide the same functionality as a $359 Kindle… though it does have that snazzy Wacom stylus.

It seems like it wouldn’t be a Monday without another pocket projector sighting, no matter how fleeting. This specimen was recently spotted in Korea, and while we have no idea who the manufacturer is or what it’s called, we do have some specs. This device features 640 x 480 resolution (scalable up to 1280 x 800), 4:3 aspect ratio, manual focus, accepts both NTSC and PAL sources, and projects a maximum of 70 inches. The projector sits on an adjustable tripod and gets up to 40 minutes on a single charge… now all it needs is a name, price, distributor, and release date!

Another week, another pocket projector sighting. In an attempt to get known before it gets buried by the hundreds of alternatives sure to pop up here in the coming months, Adapt has hosted a short video of its mX ADPP-100 mini projector. Said beamer features LCoS technology, a rechargeable battery, an SD card slot, inputs for “almost any device,” and the ability to project a 50-inch image (however blurry) onto the wall. Not much else is known right now outside of that, but you can check it out in action just after the break.

It’s official: the age of the pico projector has arrived. And we′re not talking the age of pico projector announcements, we′re talking about launches. Just after Toshiba came clean with its LED Pico Projector, along comes 3M (of all companies) with one of its own. The MPro110 pocket beamer got handled by PopSci, and the results were pretty much as we’d expect. Decently bright, extraordinarily novel, but not exactly world-class. Brightness (the lack thereof, actually) was an issue, and a few movie scenes were deemed “indecipherable.” Additionally, it has no built-in speaker, but for just $359, we suppose that’s an omission we can live with. Best of all, this one’s set to ship on September 30th. To America. Woo!

We’ve waited ages for a real-deal pico projector from Toshiba (or anyone reputable, quite frankly), and it’s looking all the more likely that we’ll be absolutely bombarded with them come CES 2009. At any rate, Toshiba is apparently close to putting the finishing touches on its LED Pico Projector, which weighs in at 100-grams and measures 10- x 4.5- x 1.7-centimeters in size. Outside of that, specifications are few and far between, but you can catch a video of its powers in the link below.
[Thanks, Jan]

Still haven’t found a
digital photo frame that suits your decor? Then you may find Cagic’s new offering here a bit more to your taste, with it boasting a simple but stylish design and some decent enough specs to back it up. That includes an 8.4-inch 800𝜘 touchscreen display, a mini USB port and, perhaps most notably, two separate SD card slots: one for storage and one to load photos (a 1GB card is included). At $180, however, it’s not exactly the cheapest 8-inch frame around, but it is made of solid brushed aluminum and natural hardwood, and you can get it in your choice of three finishes, so that’s a trade-off we’re guessing some will be more than willing to accept.

Sony and Microsoft may have sorted things out with Anascape (otherwise known as the self-proclaimed ruler of all analog sticks) before things got too out of hand, but Nintendo has been busy fighting it out with the company in court, which resulted in them being ordered to dish out a hefty $21 million earlier this year — a ruling that Nintendo naturally appealed. The big N is now facing another setback, however, as a US District Judge has rejected Nintendo’s request for a new trial, which could potentially result in a ban on sales of Wii Classic Controllers, WaveBirds, and GameCube controllers (not to mention GameCube systems). To avoid that, Nintendo will apparently either have to post a bond or put royalites from the controllers into an escrow account. For its part, Nintendo seems to be remaining defiant, saying that it “was already planning to appeal this case to the Federal Circuit court,” and that this new ruling “does not impact that decision.”

Really, QSTARZ? You’ve actually had independent testers confirm that your BT-Q818 eXtreme is the most powerful GPS receiver on the entire planet? We’re guessing not, but for what it’s worth, the second incarnation of the BT-Q818 features 51-channel tracking, 32-hours of navigation time, -158dBm sensitivity, USB connectivity, built-in Bluetooth, adjustable 1 to 5Hz update rate and a 36-second signal acquisition time (when cold). Sounds pretty run-of-the-mill from here, but QSTARZ wouldn’t fib about this thing’s world ranking, now would it?

Maybe our math is off, but we′re fairly certain 44.7-millimeters equates to around 1.76-inches. Strangely enough, LG is claiming that its Scarlet 42LG61 is actually the world’s thinnest LCD HDTV, and we all know Hitachi’s definitively thinner 1.5-inch family just started shipping to US consumers last week. Of course, maybe it just meant the slimmest it has ever produced, but we digress. The set is apparently loose in South Korea, featuring a 1080p panel, 120Hz technology, a 600,000:1 contrast ratio and four HDMI ports. Granted, the previously veiled set won’t run you cheap, as you’ll walk away ₩2.5 million ($2,427) poorer should you choose to take one home.
