‘The Simpsons’: Steve Jobs Pees on Your iPhone

Monday, December 1st, 2008

I could almost use Peter Kafka′s lede at AllThingsD on this item, as I don’t watch The Simpsons on a regular basis, either. (Actually, I use Hulu to catch up with episodes I’ve missed, as I suspect more and more people are doing.)

In any event, the iconic animated show finally took on the modern cult of Mac in its Sunday episode, although the writers obviously feared Apple′s legal team. In the show, “Apple″ is renamed “Mapple,” led by the iconic “Steve Mobs″. iPhones are named “MyPhones,” and — well, just watch the clip that Kafka helpfully provided.

iPhone Ad Banned in UK for False Advertising

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

Note to Apple: people in the UK don’t take too kindly to false advertising. Yet another one of the company’s iPhone ads has come under fire for making inflated claims. Focused on the phone’s 3G speed boosts, the commercial features the handset flying through the Web at a breakneck pace.

The Advertising Standards Authority fielded 17 complaints about the ads–not exactly a deluge of concern (though perhaps some users attempted to e-mail them from a first generation handset), but enough to get the commercial banned in the country.

The Guardian points to the above video, created by Robert Reed, with a real world iPhone next to the one in the commercial. False advertising? We’ll let you know as soon as YouTube finishes loading on our phone…

Apple Sued Over iPhone Web-Surfing Technology

Monday, November 24th, 2008

web%20on%20iphone.jpg

California-based EMG Technology sued Apple on Monday, claiming the iPhone infringes on a patent the company holds for navigating the Web on cell phones.

EMG founder Elliot A. Gottfurcht last month was awarded a patent for an “apparatus and method of manipulating a region on a wireless device screen for viewing, zooming, and scrolling Internet content.” On Nov. 21, he assigned the rights of that patent to EMG.

Apple actively and knowingly infringed on the EMG patent when producing its popular iPhone, according to the EMG filing. EMG wants damages and any profit Apple has earned from the sale of iPhones.

It remains to be seen if EMG will go after the manufacturers of similar, Web-enabled cell phones. EMG lawyers did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Apple Notebooks Take Huge Performance Hit without Battery

Friday, November 21st, 2008

Dumb Mac
Ever run your MacBook or MacBook Pro without the battery installed? Most people don’t, but some notebook users pop them out when their systems are running on AC with hopes of extending the life of their battery by a few months.

While I was benchmarking third-party RAM with a MacBook Pro this week, I noticed that the computer was taking a huge hit in performance when it wasn′t running on Apple-supplied memory. A minor decrease in performance might be unlikely, but a 37 percent plunge in processing power seemed impossible. After some backtracking, I realized that I had been running the benchmarks without the battery installed after I’d swapped out the stock RAM for third-party memory. The MacBook Pro was running off AC power for both tests, but the battery was installed only while I was running the benchmark with 4GB of stock RAM.

After some digging, I found that the performance drop is documented on Apple’s support Web site–though honestly, Apple’s reason for forcing a drop in processor speed doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Apple justifies the speed reduction by explaining that it “prevents the computer from shutting down if it demands more power than the A/C adapter alone can provide.” But what happens when a battery is no longer able to hold a charge? Does the processor speed drop in that case as well?

We benchmarked our 2.53-Ghz MacBook Pro with 4GB of RAM using Cinebench R10’s multiprocessor test, and achieved a score of 5,549 with the battery present and 3,504 with the battery removed.

Lesson learned: The battery stays in. If you’re a MacBook or MacBook Pro owner, you’ll get the best performance out of your system when you leave the battery in. A small extension of your battery’s life span is not worth a 37 percent drop in performance.

If you’re operating a MacBook or MacBook Pro system with a dead battery, I invite you to benchmark your own system: Try testing your notebook with and without the dead battery installed. You can use a free download of Cinebench R10 to benchmark your Apple system. Be sure to close all applications and disable Airport and Bluetooth before you run the test. And please let us know your results as a comment below.

Judge Dismisses Psystar’s Counterclaim Against Apple

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

psystar.JPG

A California district judge on Tuesday dismissed a counterclaim filed by Psystar that accused Apple of violating federal and state antitrust laws.

Psystar argued that Apple’s operating system is an independent market with no competitors, but the judge disagreed.

“Psystar has cited no decision lending support to its single-brand product market theory,” Judge William Alsup wrote in his decision. Psystar’s own claim explains that the Mac OS performs the same functions as other operating systems, he said.

Apple sued Psystar in July for copyright infringement, breach of contract, trademark and trade infringement, and unfair competition after Psystar started selling the Open Computer, which uses a modified version of Apple’s OS X.

Psystar filed a counterclaim in August, arguing that a market could exist for third-party Mac clones, if not for the legal and technical barriers that Apple has set up.

Psystar argued that demand would not be affected if Apple increased prices for its OS and said that similarly configured computers cost much less than Apple machines.

“Although the responsiveness of one product to the price of another is at the heart of the market definition analysis, a mere price differential alone does not necessarily signal a distinct market [or] mean that a product is unconstrained by competition,” Judge Alsup concluded.

Psystar also cited Apple’s ubiquitous advertising campaign as evidence of its market dominance, but the judge concluded just the opposite.

“Those advertising campaigns more plausibly support an inference contrary to that asserted in the counterclaim–vigorous advertising is a sign of competition, not a lack thereof,” according to the ruling. “If Mac OS simply had no reasonable substitute, Apple’s vigorous advertising would be wasted money.”

Last month, Apple and Psystar agreed to enter into a dispute resolution process in an effort to resolve Apple’s suit against Psystar. According to court documents, they have until January 31 to negotiate a settlement. If no such agreement is reached, a jury trial is set to begin on November 9, 2009.

Dell’s Latitude E6400 reviewed: lovely, save for minor annoyances

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Filed under:

If your Latitude D630 is growing a bit long in the tooth, it sounds like the Latitude E6400 is the perfect replacement. Critics over at NotebookReview had no qualms mentioning the unit’s strengths, from the rugged chassis to the excellent port assortment to the remarkable 19-hour battery life. Of course, it did point the majority of the review at business-minded users, but it’s not like you’re really looking at the Latitude line to run Crysis, anyway. Overall, reviewers couldn’t find any “major reason” to dislike the E6400, though it couldn’t help but mention a smattering of “minor annoyances.” Like, you ask? Frustrating ControlPoint software, a less-than-awesome trackpoint / touchpoint and a general build quality that made the unit “feel less durable than it really [was].” If you can overlook those gripes, however, you could be staring at a winner.

Yamaha brings the style with A-S700 / CD-S700 audio components

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

Filed under:

About this time last year, Yamaha treated us to its CD-S2000 SACD player and A-S2000 amplifier, both of which sported that timeless look that was just too dazzling to hide away in some AV cabinet. This year, the outfit is keeping with the trend by introducing the equally stunning (and even more silver) A-𔛴 amplifier and CD-𔛴 CD player (pictured after the break). The former features 90-watts x 2 of RMS power and gold-plated RCA inputs, while the latter includes a Burr Brown 192kHz/24bit DAC and a USB port for playing back MP3 / WMA files. Both units are destined to hit Japanese audio shops next month for ¥73,500 ($730) and ¥60,900 ($605), respectively.

GE intros E1055W, E1050TW and A1030 point-and-shoots

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Filed under:

Hurry on over! We had originally thought that Kodak had this award in the bag, but now that General Imaging (GE) has pumped out a trio of cameras that nearly put us to sleep, we’d say the race for the lamest introduction at Photokina is officially back on. Up first on the chopping block is the E1055W, a GE-branded point-and-shoot with a 3-inch LCD monitor, 10.1-megapixel sensor, blink / smile detection and a 5x optical zoom. Following that is the E1050TW, which packs most of the same hardware but also includes a 720p movie mode. Lastly, we’ve got the 10-megapixel A1030, which features a 3x optical zoom, 2.5-inch LCD, ultrathin design and super-simplistic button arrangement. All three cameras should be landing real soon for under three bones each, and no, they aren’t really that awful… on paper.

[Thanks, David]

I’ve been looking at the Shure MPA kits, but what do you readers recommended?”

Ask Engadget: Which digicam takes the best video?

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

We know, we know — a camera is only as good as the images it produces, but this week’s Ask Engadget question revolves around an oft overlooked video function. (Psst… feel free to shoot over your own inquiry to ask at engadget dawt com, but only after you check out Jonathan’s question below.)

“What’s a good camera that takes great quality video for at least 30 minutes (yes, I know I′d have to buy an extra memory card)? So many of the cameras I′ve messed with have a limit on how much you can record in one session, even if you have enough storage space. Thanks!”

Here recently, a few cameras have surfaced with 720p video capabilities, and there’s a plethora of options if VGA is good enough. What camera is best for snagging those candid videos that inevitably end up on YouTube / Facebook / etc.? Don’t lead the man astray, now.

Samsung launches free Recycling Direct program for consumers

Hopefully by now you know that the gadget in your pocket or notebook on your lap is full of toxic ooze seeping into your fingers with every tap. This has retailers and manufacturers scrambling to help you recycle those wares, the latest being Samsung with its new Recycling Direct plan. It expands on the company’s trio of limited recycling programs that cover only mobile phones, toner, and office equipment. The new program will accept any obsolete or broken product free of charge — assuming it has a “Samsung” label somewhere on it. (You can recycle other stuff too for a fee.) Partnerships are currently being negotiated with “respected” facilities in all 50 states, meaning you’ll be able can lay your old celly or washing machine to rest in person starting next month.

It has been a hot minute since WowWee let the Alive animals out of the zoo, but this particular White Tiger Cub has just recently been loosed from its cage. Although it’s just dying for an I Can Has Cheezburger? caption (feel free to drop your best in comments below), this cute cat looks to be the perfect play toy for small children or adults hoping to rekindle some of that youthful innocence. We′re also told that the eyebrow and mouth movements are “quite realistic,” but its the individual personality that really makes it worth coming back to. Check out the unboxing and a brief review in the read link, and peek a video of the feline in action after the cut.
