Memorex pushes out two digiframes for proactive Mother’s Day shoppers

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Oh sure, Mother’s Day is over a month away, but don’t let mama know that reading this post was the only thing that reminded you. If you’re suddenly stricken with panic, take heart, as Memorex has a new duo of digital photo frames sure to make the woman most special to you smile. Purposely designed with “feminine graphics,” the Special Occasions and Floral models both feature 7-inch 480 x 234 resolution panels and USB connectivity. As for the former, you’ll find four interchangeable inserts and a SD / MMC expansion slot, while the latter provides a 4-in-1 reader and oodles of floral patterns. Interestingly, we′ve no idea if either will be seen outside of K-Mart, but both frames can be purchased at the aforesaid retailer next month for $89.99 apiece.

Robotic robuCAB takes you on a slow speed, autonomous ride of doom

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

We′ve already seen strikes caused over the introduction of some relatively minor technology in taxis, but that’s nothing compared to the brouhaha that could be in store one day in the future, at least if things like the robuCAB are any indication. That seemingly innocuous vehicle pictured above (along with an approximation of a future model) is developed by France’s Robosoft, and has apparently proven itself successful in the limited uses it’s been put to so far, with it relying a a series of cameras that keep track of the curb and some sensors placed beneath the ground. Needless to say, those requirements should let cabbies rest easy for now but, given other recent developments, it seems pretty likely that the Great Taxi Strike of 2025 is becoming more and more inevitable.

MadCatz Xbox 360 HDMI Conversion kit now officially available

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

No, it won′t get you “true” HDMI, but older 360 owners looking to get rid of those clunky component cables might want to take note: that MadCatz HDMI Conversion Kit is now official. The $90 adapter comes with cables and supports HDMI 1.3, 1080p, Dolby Digital and DTS — but there’s no telling what the VGA-to-HDMI signal conversion will do to your image quality, so you’re probably better off doing the eBay shuffle and getting a new 360 with HDMI built-in.

More Palm 800w specs leak out, no change in ugliness

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

Filed under:

For the handful of you left still getting stoked on Palm news, here’s some interesting tidbits for you. The folks over at Treonauts have gotten some “possible” specifications of the Sprint-bound Treo 800w (or as we like to call it, the Gatesnote Palm) and are sharing them with the world. According to the sources, the new Windows Mobile 6-based Palm phone will be Centro-thin, trade the old proprietary HotSync connector for a mini-USB jack, has a dedicated hardware switch for turning WiFi on and off, will sport EV-DO Rev. A, Bluetooth 2.0, as well as 802.11g, and utilizes microSD cards in addition to its 256MB of memory. The article also says that the 2-megapixel camera takes “decent” pictures, and there is an additional 128MB of memory for “something else.” More shocking (and possibly stupid) is that Palm has removed the headphone jack altogether, and users must employ some type of miniUSB contraption or go Bluetooth. Ed, if this is one of those breakthrough devices you mentioned, color us unimpressed.

Samsung partners with HydroGen to distribute fuel cell power plants

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

Filed under:

Trust us, this ain’t the first time we’ve heard “Samsung″ and “fuel cell″ mentioned in the same breath, but signing up with another firm to be its “sole and exclusive distributor” of fuel cell power plants sounds pretty serious. Sure enough, Sammy has inked an agreement with US-based HydroGen, and will soon be selling its phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC) power plants in Asia, the Middle East and in other unspecified regions. Reportedly, Samsung is planning to use HydroGen’s technologies to “supply heat and electricity from fuel cell power plants to Korean chemical plants or energy providers and expand its business into the hydrogen fuel cell market.” Yeah, we’d say locking things in with a hydrogen fuel cell manufacturer ’til 2015 is a pretty good way to accomplish that.

Sixty years ago today: transistors — and modern electronics — were born

Sunday, December 16th, 2007

Filed under:

Like transistors? You must — you’re using a few million (or billion) right now just reading this sentence. But it’s actually difficult to overstate the transistor’s importance since its invention exactly 60 years ago today by super nerd gods John Bardeen, Walter Brattain, and William Shockley — everything changed when solid state circuits were finally able to replace mechanical relays and vacuum tubes. There’s little doubt electronics and technology as we know it today are only possible because of this fundamental discovery, although 60 years on we can only seem to navel gaze about what sorts of real jobs we’d all have if we weren’t just spending our days obsessing about the gadgets these transistors power.

India’s Tata announces plans for hydrogen car

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

Filed under:

India — already an established presence in the alternative fuels space — has announced that it will be joining the US, Japan, Germany, and the Netherlands in rolling out a hydrogen-powered car next year. The country’s space agency (ISRO) has teamed up with Tata Motors — makers of the recently-revealed plastic car — to develop a fuel cell vehicle whose only emissions will be water vapor, critical for a developing country whose pollution woes are only getting worse. According to ISRO chairman Madhavan Nair, while the hydro-car is scheduled for 2008 completion, mass production has yet to be determined.
