More Climate Scientists Now Support Geoengineering

It recently polled a group of ‘the world’s leading climate scientists,’ revealing a ‘growing support for geoengineering’ in addition to cutting CO2 &mdash not as a substitute. For example, Jim Lovelock, author of The Gaia Theory, comments: ‘I disagree that geoengineering the climate is a dangerous distraction and I disagree that on no account should it ever be considered. I strongly agree that we now need a “plan B” where a geoengineering strategy is drawn up in parallel with other measures to curb CO2 emissions.’ Professor Kerry Emanuel of MIT said, ‘While a geoengineering solution is bound to be less than desirable, the probability of getting global agreement on emissions reductions before it is too late is very small.’”

More Evidence For a Clovis-Killer Comet

fortapocalypse sends word that a new paper was published today in the journal Science on the hypothesis that a comet impact wiped out the Clovis people 12,900 years ago. (We discussed this hypothesis last year when it was put forth.) The new evidence is a layer of nanodiamonds at locations all across North America, at a depth corresponding to 12,900 years ago, none earlier or later. The researchers hypothesize that the comet that initiated the Younger Dryas, reversing the warming from the previous ice age, fragmented and exploded in a continent-wide conflagration that produced a layer of diamond from carbon on the surface. While disputing the current hypothesis, NASA’s David Morrison allows, “They may have discovered something absolutely marvelous and unexplained.”

Is the Yellowstone Supervolcano About To Blow?

An anonymous reader writes “Apparently, Yellowstone National Park has been having a very unusual number of earthquakes. Many of the most recent tremors have been deeper underground, an ominous sign. Combine that with a rapid rise in elevation over the past three years, and the possibility that earthquake activity from surrounding areas could trigger such an eruption on its own, and you’ve got the possible warning signs of a supervolcano eruption that would wipe out half to 2/3 of the continental US, plunge global temperatures, and wipe out a very significant chunk of world food sources. Evolution of Intelligence More Complex Than Once Thought

In opposition to the widely held view that intelligence is largely linear in nature, in many cases intelligent traits have developed along independent paths. Leap Second To Be Added Dec 31, 2008

ammorris writes “Don’t be the laughingstock of your friends when you shout ‘Happy New Years’ a second too early … The International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service has announced that a leap second will be added on December 31, 2008 at 23h 59m 60s, meaning that this year will be exactly one second longer. The last leap second occurred Dec 31, 2005, they are added due to fluctuations in the rotational speed of the earth. You can read all about leap seconds on Wikipedia.”

Study Abroad For Computer Science Majors?

sbilstein writes “I’m currently a sophomore studying computer science with a penchant for international travel. While I do realize that the internet precludes the need for us geeks to travel farther than our desks, I’d still like to take a few courses taught in English or Spanish (the two languages I’m fluent in) somewhere outside of the country. The trouble is I can’t go to just any school, because like any other engineering degree, I have to take technical courses every semester. So I need a school with a something at least similar to a computer science program in the states. Has anybody here from the US studied abroad while doing computer science? Was it worthwhile? Or anyone from outside the United States recommend a university program?”

Space Is Just a Little Bit Closer Than Expected

Currently, the ionosphere &mdash a layer of charged particles that envelopes the planet &mdash is at an altitude of about 420km, some 200km lower than expected. The behaviour of the ionosphere is important because disturbances in its structure can upset satellite communications and radar.”

Inside the Active Volcano On Montserrat

Roland Piquepaille writes “An international team of researchers has begun collecting imaging data on the Soufriere Hills Volcano in Montserrat, which has been erupting regularly since 1995. They’re using the equivalent of a CAT scan to understand its internal structure and how and when it erupts. The experiment is dubbed SEA-CALIPSO and ‘will use air guns and a string of sensors off the back of a research ship combined with sensors on land to try to image the magma chamber.’ Early results are surprising. Quoting one of the leading scientists: ‘The interesting thing is that much more magma is erupting than appears represented by the subsiding bowl. … The magma volume in Montserrat eruptions is much larger than anyone would estimate from the surface deformation, because of the elastic storage of magma in what is effectively a huge magma sponge.’”

SUNSTOP writes to tell that a relatively unknown Maryland scientist has proposed a public patent that he claims could combat global warming. The proposed plan would require massive amounts of water be sprayed into the air in an effort to bolster the earth’s existing air conditioning system. “First, the sprayed droplets would transform to water vapor, a change that absorbs thermal energy near ground level then the rising vapor would condense into sunlight-reflecting clouds and cooling rain, releasing much of the stored energy into space in the form of infrared radiation. Kenneth Caldeira, a climate scientist for the Carnegie Institution’s Department of Global Ecology at Stanford University whose computer simulation of Ace’s invention suggests it would significantly cool the planet. The simulated evaporation of about one-half inch of additional water everywhere in the world produced immediate planetary cooling effects that were projected to reach nearly 1 degree Fahrenheit within 20 or 30 years, Caldeira said.”

Scientists Find Hole In Earth’s Magnetic Field

Despite what scientists originally thought, these holes allow 20 times the normal amount of solar particles through when they are facing away from the sun. Drilling Hits an Active Magma Chamber In Hawaii

Smivs writes “The BBC are reporting that drillers looking for geothermal energy in Hawaii have inadvertently put a well right into a magma chamber. Molten rock pushed back up the borehole several meters before solidifying, making it perfectly safe to study. Magma specialist Bruce Marsh says it will allow scientists to observe directly how granites are made. ‘This is unprecedented; this is the first time a magma has been found in its natural habitat,’ the Johns Hopkins University professor told BBC News. ‘Before, all we had to deal with were lava flows but they are the end of a magma’s life. They’re lying there on the surface, they’ve de-gassed. It’s not the natural habitat.’ It is hoped the site can now become a laboratory, with a series of cores drilled around the chamber to better characterise the crystallisation changes occurring in the rock as it loses temperature.”

O’Reilly Media spent some time last week speaking to Dr. Wurman about what it takes, technologically, to operate a weather radar in 100-mile-per-hour winds in the middle of a lightning storm. They also talked about the value of this kind of research to both tornado and hurricane research, and how having a film crew around during missions affects the science.”

A Sixth Region in the Magnetosphere

Roland Piquepaille writes “As you probably know, Earth’s magnetosphere, ‘the invisible bubble of magnetic fields and electrically charged particles that surrounds and protects the planet from the periodically lethal radiation of the solar wind,’ was discovered in 1958. Until now, it was believed to comprise five regions, including the ionosphere or the Van Allen radiation belts. Now, a US research team has discovered a sixth region, called the warm plasma cloak.”
